Saturday just gone saw me heading over to Birmingham for Strength and Conditioning coach Phil Learney’s seminar on Hypertrophy. Phil has established himself as a very reputable coach through training some elite athletes including worlds strongest man competitors, fitness models, pro rugby players, NFL players and many more. After following Phil’s writing on Facebook for a while he intrigued me as a fellow professional to reach out and try and learn more from him, as his hypertrophy seminar was coming up and taking place at a venue close to my home I decided to book a place and see if I can learn some new bits.
The seminar was content rich whilst allowing plenty of time for discussion on the topics and all in all was a great day out. I found it especially interesting to hear Phil’s theories on sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar hypertrophy as this had been a hot topic of discussion between me and a couple of other coaches a few days prior to the seminar. What I really took away from the day was although I managed to learn some cool new stuff, a lot of mine and Phil’s basic training principles and ideologies are very similar, this of course was flattering for myself as Phil is held in such high regard as a trainer and means I must be doing something right as a coach!
All in all a good day out and brilliant to listen and chat with somebody so successful in the industry which further inspired me to work even harder to achieve my goals as a coach.
